Busting Myths about Chiropractors in Melbourne

In the world of health and wellness, it seems that everybody has an opinion on this particular treatment or that particular practice. While some of those opinions might be solid and informed, others are often founded on speculation and hearsay. Myths about these treatments become formed and, if enough people believe them, they become ‘truths’ that might not necessarily be true at all. The chiropractic profession certainly has numerous myths surrounding it, many of them unfounded. Let’s take a look at just a few of them.

Myth One – Chiropractors are not real doctors

This is a common one we hear. Walk into any chiropractic clinic in Melbourne, though, and in any chiropractor’s office you’ll likely see their Doctor of Chiropractic certificate proudly placed on the wall. Truth is, a chiropractor actually needs to complete 4 to 5 years of post-graduate study in order to receive their specialist qualification on top of their generalist medicine degree, so they are just as qualified – if not more so – than a general practitioner.

Myth Two: Spinal adjustments are painful

Often when you hear the word chiropractor or chiropractic, terms like ‘cracking the back’ usually follow. This can often put fear into patients who have never been to a chiropractic clinic before as they think the process will be painful. The truth is that spinal adjustments (i.e. what people actually mean by ‘cracking the back’) actually produce feelings of great relief. Of course, if you’d never experienced it before you might experience some post-treatment soreness, in much the same way you’ll experience Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) if you haven’t exercised in a while. But once you’ve had a few treatments, that feeling will give way to pain relief.

Myth Three: Once you start chiropractic treatment, you’ll need to keep coming back forever

Again, not true. Your body won’t break down simply because you’ve stopped chiropractic treatment. But, like regular exercise and a healthy, balanced diet, chiropractic treatment can help you to maintain a healthy, fully functional body and stave off its degradation as you get older. So while we certainly believe you will benefit from continued chiropractic treatment, the choice is ultimately yours.
