It might seem surprising to learn that chiropractic treatment is applicable for conditions such as vertigo and dizziness, as most of the time we think of chiropractic care relating only to relief from physical discomfort or soreness of the body.
Vertigo is an unpleasant sensation of disorientation that can cause nausea, sweating and vomiting. It is common in many people when they are looking down from a great height; however, it can also originate from disturbances in pathways in the nervous system or disorders in the inner ear. So, how can chiropractic treatment help? Our chiropractors in Melbourne explain below.
There are two methods which chiropractors can use to treat vertigo. One of them is the use of manipulation to target joints that are not moving properly. For example, in cervicogenic vertigo (dizziness that results from neck pains), the faulty motions in the upper neck create misinformation about body position and movement going from the joints to the brain. This sort of vertigo can be effectively treated with chiropractic manipulation.
The other treatment method is the Epley maneuver, otherwise known as the repositioning maneuver. In some people where debris has built up in the vestibulocochlear system (the balance system) of the ear, the hair-like sensors that provide information to the central nervous system become affected, which may result in vertigo. A chiropractor may use the Epley Maneuver to reposition the debris into a less problematic position.
Further to these treatments, your chiropractor may also recommend a number of exercises that can help, as well as review your diet to eliminate aggressors such as alcohol, caffeine and tobacco.
