What Is Lactose & Fructose Intolerances?

Lactose and fructose intolerances occur when your digestive system has trouble breaking down specific types of sugars, lactose (found in dairy) and fructose (found in fruit, honey and some vegetables or processed foods). When these sugars aren’t properly absorbed in the small intestine, they ferment in the gut and can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like bloating, pain, and altered bowel habits.

Unlike food allergies, these intolerances don’t involve the immune system. They are typically caused by enzyme deficiencies or absorption issues and are often dose-dependent, meaning symptoms worsen the more you consume. Many people live with these intolerances without realising what’s triggering their symptoms. Identifying the source can bring a huge sense of relief and open up a clearer path forward.
