Erica has been a practicing Naturopath for over 20 years and is now also a generalist Psychologist. She has strong foundations as an integrative therapist, believing that true mental and physical health occurs when the body and mind are in sync. She works with clients who are having difficulty with anxiety, panic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, stress, mood disorders, addiction, weight issues and phobias.
Erica is an advocate of therapies which incorporate mindfulness, such as; Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), which utilises relaxation practices as well as restructuring the negative, self-sabotaging thoughts which control us.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) – Using a combination of cognitive therapy and minfulness. MBCT is an approach to psychotherapy that uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) methods in collaboration with mindfulness meditative practices and similar psychological strategies. It was originally created to be a relapse-prevention treatment for individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) – The aim of ACT is to help us create a rich, full and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that life inevitably brings. ACT does this by teaching us psychological skills to handle painful thoughts and feelings effectively, in such a way that they have much less impact and influence – these are known as mindfulness skills which help us clarify what’s truly important and meaningful to us – that is, clarify our values – and use the knowledge to guide, inspire, and motivate us to set goals and take action that enriches our life.
Gut directed hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Gut-directed hypnotherapy has recently emerged as a promising approach to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in people with IBS. These symptoms include things like abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. During a session of gut-directed hypnotherapy the therapist provides suggestions for the control of gastrointestinal function to the subconscious and part of the mind.
Multiple well- controlled studies, have shown that gut-directed hypnotherapy improves gastrointestinal symptoms in people with IBS by 70-80% and these improvements are maintained.
We don’t completely understand exactly how gut-directed hypnotherapy works other than to say that it has multiple potential mechanisms of action on the brain-gut axis. For example, gut-directed hypnotherapy has been shown to reduce gastrointestinal pain, and symptoms by improving the stress response and reducing sensitivity, as well as reducing levels of anxiety and depression and enhancing overall quality of life.
Gut-directed hypnotherapy has been shown to be equally as effective in terms of improving gastrointestinal symptoms as the low FODMAP diet. This means that people can get the same level of symptom control without having to change what they eat.
