What Is PMDD?

Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that causes significant mood, emotional, and physical symptoms in the weeks leading up to a period. Unlike typical PMS, PMDD can be deeply disruptive to daily life, relationships, and mental wellbeing, often with symptoms that feel out of proportion to usual hormonal changes.

PMDD is not just “bad PMS” — it is a recognised hormonal sensitivity disorder that affects the brain’s response to natural hormone fluctuations. Understanding this condition through a holistic lens can make all the difference in managing symptoms with compassion and clarity.

Common Signs & Symptoms

PMDD symptoms usually appear in the luteal phase (the 1–2 weeks before menstruation) and often ease once the period begins. Symptoms may include:

  • Intense mood swings, irritability, or anger
  • Depression or hopelessness
  • Anxiety or tension
  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling overwhelmed
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Physical symptoms like bloating, breast tenderness, or joint pain
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • A feeling of being unlike yourself

Root Causes & Contributing Factors

PMDD is believed to stem from a heightened sensitivity in the brain to the normal hormonal shifts that occur during the menstrual cycle — especially changes in progesterone. This sensitivity may affect neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, which regulate mood, calm, and emotional stability.

Stress, gut health, poor detoxification, and nutrient deficiencies (such as magnesium, B6, zinc, and omega-3s) can all influence how hormones and brain chemistry interact. A history of trauma or anxiety may also make symptoms more prominent.
